The UNITY trade union was registered with the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic on December 31, 2019. On January 8, 2020, the employer, Orange Business Services Slovakia s.r.o., was informed of its existence. Since that moment, it has been acting as a representative of the employees of this company.
It is the right of every employee to pursue their interests through representatives operating at the employer’s premises. We chose the form of a trade union organization, as it has the strongest position among all representatives in our legislation.
While it may seem that trade unions are a relic of the past, the truth is that their popularity is currently growing. Trade unions operate at employers across the entire labor market, not only in Western countries but also in Slovakia.
IT and Telco companies are likely among the last places where trade union organizations like ours are being established. This is mainly because working conditions here are often disproportionately better than, for example, in the manufacturing sector (car factories, ironworks, etc.). However, this does not mean that they have no justification in such companies.
Whether it is about improving the work environment, working conditions, benefits, or for instance, overseeing the adherence to health and safety regulations at work, trade unions serve as a unified voice on the employer’s premises during negotiations with the company’s management.
